Dr. Rilwan Babalola, Nigeria's minister for power, has decided to develop coalfired power plants in an attempt to boost power production in Nigeria. The decision was taken so that the government can reach its goal of 6,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity production at the end of 2009, 10,000 MW at the end of 2010, and 50,000 MW by the year 2020.
Enugu power station SourceWatch. The Enugu power station is a proposed 500megawatt (MW) coalfired plant in Enugu, Nigeria, sponsored by One Nation Energy. Previous proposals were sponsored by India's Essar .
Coal was used to generate electricity through coalfired power stations. All these are in addition to use of coal for domestic cooking and other industrial applications. Significant commercial quantities are evident in a belt spanning Enugu, Benue, Kogi, Nassarawa, and Gombe states.
